In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Sierra Leone.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. The country’s name has been derived from the words "Serra Leao," which in Portuguese means "Lioness Mountains". In 1462, Portuguese explorer Pedro de Sintra mapped the hills surrounding what is now Freetown Harbour, naming the shaped formation Serra da Leoa or "Serra Leoa".
2. Sierra Leone is one of the smallest republics in Africa and in terms of size it ranks as the 118th largest country in the world. For a country as small as this, Sierra Leone is home to an astounding 16 groups belong to different ethnicities. Each ethnic group has their own language. The Temne are the largest and most influential group followed by Mende group.
3. Freetown, which overlooks the Atlantic Ocean, is the capital and largest city of the country.
4. One of the top 10 diamond producing nations in the world, it also earns a lot of foreign currency from mineral exports. Though rich in diamonds, it has struggled against exploitation of resources and trade problems. Sierra Leone is famous for ‘blood-diamonds’ that were mined and sold during the civil war to raise money for weapons.
5. Sierra Leone is a predominantly Muslim country, though with an influential Christian minority. Sierra Leone is regarded as one of the most religiously tolerant nations in the world. Muslims and Christians collaborate and interact with each other peacefully. Religious violence is extremely rare in the country.
6. Although English is the official language spoken at schools and government administration, the Krio language is the most widely spoken language across Sierra Leone and is spoken by 97% of the country's population. The language is native to the Sierra Leone Creole people or Krios, (a community of about 300,000 descendants of freed slaves from the West Indies, United States and Great Britain).
7. Sierra Leone, also known as “the little jewel” in West Africa is blessed with a fusion of different cultures, religions and races. About sixteen ethnic groups inhabit Sierra Leone, each with its own language and customs. The two largest and most influential are the Temne and the Mende people.
