In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Liberia.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The Republic of Liberia began as a settlement of the American Colonization Society (ACS), who believed African Americans would face better chances for freedom in Africa than in the United States. The country declared its independence on July 26, 1847. The U.S. did not recognize Liberia's independence until during the American Civil War on February 5, 1862.

2. Liberia is the only African republic to have self-proclaimed independence without gaining independence through revolt from any other nation, being Africa's first and oldest modern republic. Liberia maintained and kept its independence during the European colonial era.

3. Containing one of the richest ecosystems on the African continent, the Sapo National Park is declared as one of the 261 natural wonders of the world. Home to the world-famous pygmy hippopotamus, this sanctuary has several other animal species and is spread over an area equal to the size of Los Angeles, California.

4. Monrovia is the capital city of the West African country of Liberia. Monrovia is named in honor of U.S. President James Monroe, a prominent supporter of the colonization of Liberia and the American Colonization Society. Along with Washington, D.C., it is one of two national capitals to be named after a U.S. President.

5. Liberia had the second-highest rate of economic growth in the world during the 1950s. But Liberia’s ascending path ended in 1980, with a military coup. Political turmoil continued throughout the year and culminated in 2 extremely violent civil wars in 1989-1997 and 1999-2003. Today the democratic process seems to work and Liberia has started to slowly recover from its bloody past.

6. It is one of only three countries, along with the United States and Burma that does not exclusively use the International System of Units — the modern form of the metric system.

7. Charles King won the presidential elections of 1927 in what was classified by the Guinness Book of Records (1982) as the most fraudulent elections ever reported in world history. According to an official statement, King received 234,000 votes; however, Liberia had 15,000 registered voters at the time.
