In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Ivory Coast.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Côte d’Ivoire is the country’s preferred name for itself. The trade in ivory which gave the country its name had almost died out by the 18th century.
2. The Basilica of Our Lady of Peace in The Ivory Coast capital of Yamoussoukro is one of the largest church buildings in the world covering 30000 square metres and accommodating 18,000 people. This is in spite of the fact that about a 40% of the country is Christian.
3. Ivory Coast has two official capitals. Yamoussoukro is the administrative and political capital, and it is also the fourth largest city in the country. However, Abidjan serves as the economic capital and is listed as official capital of the country in most guidebooks. The city has the third largest population of French speaking individuals anywhere in the world.
4. The Fêtes des Masques, (Festival of Masks) held in November in the region of Man is one of Cote d’Ivoire’s biggest and best-known festivals. Competitions between villages are held in order to find the best dancers, and to pay homage to the forest spirits embodied in the intricate masks.
5. Unlike traditional accounts of African countries, the Ivory Coast economy is the most advanced in sub-Saharan Africa, and one of the most developed economies in Africa as a whole.
6. Although there are other properties on the tentative list, Taï National Park, Mount Nimba Strict Nature Reserve, Comoé National Park, and the Historic Town of Grand-Bassam are the four properties that are on the World Heritage List in 2013. The three parks alone are home to thousands of different species of both flora and fauna, many of which are endangered or at risk.
7. Five important states flourished in Ivory Coast during the pre-European era. Compared to neighboring Ghana, Ivory Coast suffered little from the slave trade, as European slaving and merchant ships preferred other areas along the coast with better harbors. By the end of the 1880s, France had established what came through for control over the coastal regions of Ivory Coast, and in 1889 Britain recognized French sovereignty in the area. It gained independence in 1960.
