In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Ghana.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The climate of Ghana is tropical and there are two main seasons: the wet season and the dry season. Ghana has an array of wildlife that can be seen at zoos and national parks in Ghana, although populations have been drastically reduced by habitat loss and poaching.

2. The Anglo-Ashanti Wars were a series of five conflicts between the Ashanti Empire, in the Akan interior of the Gold Coast, (now Ghana), and the invading British Empire and British-allied African states that took place between 1824 and 1901. The wars were mainly due to Ashanti attempts to establish strong control over the coastal areas of what is now Ghana. The Ashanti territories became part of the Gold Coast colony on 1 January 1902.

3. Lake Volta, in the Volta region of the country, is one of the world’s largest man-made lake. It’s 250 miles long and covers 8,502 km2, or 3.6 percent of Ghana’s area.

4. Elmina Castle is the oldest European built construction in Sub-Saharan Africa. It was built by the Portuguese around 1482 and its name translates as gold mine. However, it has a sad history and serves as a pertinent reminder to the brutal past of the colonial world. The castle was once used to store slaves before they were shipped off and taken to the Americas.

5. When the country achieved independence in 1957, it took its new name from The Ghana Empire. The word Ghana roughly translates into English as Warrior King. Prior to this, the country had been known as the Wagadou Empire for around 300 years. The capital, Accra, also has an unusual translation – it comes from the African word Nkran meaning ants. It is so-called as there is an abundance of anthills in the areas surrounding the city.

6. Kumasi is the former capital of Ghana’s Ashanti Kingdom in southern-central Ghana. Kumasi is Ghana’s second largest city with a population of around 1.5 million. You can meet the current Ashanti king here, he makes an appearance to greet the public every 42 days. Ghana has the largest market in West Africa. It’s called Kejetia market and it’s located in Kumasi.

7. Accra has a mixture of modern buildings, shanty towns, occasional castle and lively markets. The central hub is around the Makola Market; just south of the market is the Atlantic Ocean.
