In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Eritrea.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Eritrea is a multilingual country. The nation has no official language, as the Constitution establishes the "equality of all Eritrean languages". There are 9 recognized ethnic groups. According to recent estimates, 50% of the population adheres to Christianity and 48% to Islam.
2. Eritrea literally means “red”, and gets its name after the Red Sea. Erythra Thalassa was the name the Greek settlers in Egypt (Ptolemaic dynasty) of the third century B.C labeled the body of water between the Arab peninsula and the African continent. The Red Sea is widening at the rate of about one-half inch per year and will one day become an ocean. About 34 million years ago the Red Sea began to open up.
3. During the last interglacial period, the Red Sea coast of Eritrea was occupied by early anatomically modern humans. It is believed that the area was on the route out of Africa that some scholars suggest was used by early humans to colonize the rest of the Old World. In 1999, the Eritrean Research Project Team discovered a Paleolithic site with stone and obsidian tools dated to over 125,000 years old near the Bay of Zula.
4. Asmara is also called the “Italy’s African City” or “New Rome”. Due to the distinctive Italian touch it exudes.
5. Eritrea after Egypt has the second highest archeological historical discoveries in Africa. The number of archeological sites in the country which was 45,000 previously has now increased to 80,000.
6. The creation of modern-day Eritrea is a result of the incorporation of independent, distinct kingdoms and sultanates (for example, Medri Bahri and the Sultanate of Aussa) eventually resulting in the formation of Italian Eritrea. In 1947 Eritrea became part of a federation with Ethiopia.
7. Eritrea is a one-party state in which national legislative elections have been repeatedly postponed. According to Human Rights Watch, the Eritrean government's human rights record is considered among the worst in the world. The compulsory military service requires lengthy, indefinite conscription periods, which some Eritreans leave the country in order to avoid. Since all local media is state-owned, Eritrea was also ranked as having the least press freedom in the global Press Freedom Index.
