Djibouti is one of the four nations that make up the Horn of Africa, yet not many people have heard of this tiny African nation. It is thought that Djibouti was part of the route that the first humans took to exit Africa, into Asia.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Djibouti.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. The top part of the country is almost reaching out towards the Arabian Peninsula and what is modern day Yemen. This feeling is mutual, and has been throughout history, as trade has occurred from Africa through Djibouti to the Arabian Peninsula and also from the Arabian Peninsula through Djibouti to Africa.

2. Djibouti City is the capital and largest city of Djibouti, which is named after it. Djibouti City has a population of around 529,000 inhabitants, which counts for over 70% of the country's population. The settlement was founded in 1888 by the French, on land leased from the ruling Somali and Afar Sultans.

3. Djibouti is home to the only United States military base in Africa. Camp Lemonnier is an important US strategic base in the Horn of Africa. Shortly after the 9/11 attacks, the United States established a presence in Djibouti along with Coalition Forces. France's 13th Demi-Brigade of the Foreign Legion is based in Djibouti.

4. Lake Assal is a saline lake which lies 155 m below sea level in the Afar Triangle, making it the lowest point on land in Africa and the third-lowest point on Earth after the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. No outflow occurs from the lake, and due to high evaporation, the salinity level of its waters is 10 times that of the sea, making it the most saline in the world after Don Juan Pond in Antarctica.

5. Through close contacts with the adjacent Arabian Peninsula for more than 1,000 years, the Somali and Afar ethnic groups in the region became among the first populations on the continent to embrace Islam. Islam entered the region very early on, as a group of persecuted Muslims had sought refuge across the Red Sea in the Horn of Africa at the urging of the Islamic prophet Muhammad.

6. In 1958 a referendum was held in Djibouti to decide whether to remain with France or to join the Somali Republic. It failed. In 1967, a second plebiscite was held to determine the fate of the territory. It failed too. In 1977, a third referendum took place. A landslide 98.8% of the electorate supported disengagement from France, officially marking Djibouti's independence.

7. Together with northern Somalia, Eritrea and the Red Sea coast of Sudan, Djibouti is considered the most likely location of the land known to the ancient Egyptians as Punt (or "Ta Netjeru", meaning "God's Land"). The old territory's first mention dates to the 25th century BC.
