Burundi has been dominated by German, and later Belgian forces for most of its modern history. Both governed the area under a forcibly unified Rwandan-Burundian colony. But these nation were never united before colonization, so this move by European powers exacerbated the social differences and generated a lot of instability.

In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Burundi.

1. Germany established armed forces in Ruanda and Burundi at the end of the 19th century, colonizing the area and establishing German East Africa. After being defeated in World War I, Germany was forced to cede control of a section of the former German East Africa to Belgium.

2. The source of the Nile is sometimes considered to be Lake Victoria, but the lake has feeder rivers of considerable size. The Kagera River, which flows into Lake Victoria near the Tanzanian town of Bukoba, is the longest feeder, which has its longest tributary the Ruvyironza from Burundi.

3. Perched on the top of Congo-Nile ranges, Kibira Park is a majestic primeval rainy forest covering 40 000 hectares. It is today instituted as a protected area and is habitat to some 98 mammal species, a dozen of primates (numerous families of chimpanzees, baboons, tailed monkeys, black colobus), but also some 200 species of birdlife.

4. Gustave is the name of a Nile crocodile, a giant who lives in Burundi. It is estimated that Gustave is 6 meters long and his weight is around 1000 kilos. It is believed that he is the largest crocodile in Africa and even in the world.

5. Today the population of Burundi is divided between the Hutu (85%) and the Tutsi, approximately 14%. While the Hutu and Tutsi are considered to be two separate ethnic groups, scholars point out that they speak the same language, have a history of intermarriage, and share many cultural characteristics. Traditionally, the differences between the two groups are occupational rather than ethnic.

6. Burundi is a part of the Albertine Rift, the western extension of the East African Rift. The rift is a narrow zone, in which the African Plate is in the process of splitting into two tectonic plates. As extension continues, lithospheric rupture will occur within 10 million years, the Somalian plate will break off, and a new ocean basin will form.

7. 2 civil wars occurred in Burundi since its independence. In addition, deforestation of the entire country is almost completely due to overpopulation. Add to this corruption, weak infrastructure, poor access to health and education, and hunger and you won’t be surprised that in 2016 the country was ranked as the world's least happy nation.
