In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Mauritania.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. One of the longest trains in the world is found in Mauritania. It measures almost three kilometers long.

2. If you look at Mauritania from space, you can see a clear bull’s-eye-like image called “The Eye of Africa.” It is a Richat structure with a diameter of about 30 miles and believed to be the result of the simultaneous lifting of the underlying geology.

3. The capital of Mauritania is Nouakchott, which means “place of the winds.” It was designated as the country’s capital only in 1960 and is therefore one of the world’s newest capitals. Nouakchott was a small village until it was chosen to become the capital in 1957 in preparation for Mauritanian independence three years later.

4. Mauritania’s Bay of Nouadhibou, hides one of the biggest ships cemeteries in the world. There are more than 300 wrecks from all nations beached permanently on its shores.

5. In 1981, Mauritania became the last country in the world to abolish slavery officially but it was not made a crime until 2007. The practice of slavery still widely continues. Slavery in Mauritania was mainly by Mauritanian Arabs enslaving indigenous black Mauritanians.

6. The Ancient city of Chinguetti founded in 777 AD is the spiritual capital of Mauritania, and is widely considered by Mauritanians to be the seventh holiest city of Islam. For centuries the city was a principal gathering place for pilgrims of the Maghreb to gather on the way to Mecca. It became known as a holy city in its own right, especially for pilgrims unable to make the long journey to the Arab Peninsula. For many centuries all of Mauritania was popularly known in the Arab world as Bilad Shinqit, "the land of Chinguetti."

7. Terjit is an oasis (in the proper sense: a well in a dry area), popular with Mauritania’s few tourists. It nestles in a cut on the edge of an arid plateau, and stretches a few hundred metres alongside a stream that emerges from the rock.
