In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Rwanda.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Rwanda is today known for incredible mountain gorilla safaris and yes; they are truly amazing, however Rwanda has more primates and wildlife to offer rather than only mountain gorillas. They include the chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest national park and the golden monkeys in Volcanoes national park.

2. The government of Rwanda banned plastic bags from the country and also discouraged littering of rubbish anyhow. This was boosted by the Umuganda day (last Saturday of every month) where all Rwandan citizens irrespective of their class are supposed to engage in general cleaning.

3. Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, is considered to be the cleanest city in Africa. Kigali was founded in 1907 by Dr. Richard Kandt under German colonial rule, but did not become the capital until Rwandan independence in 1962.

4. Rwandans are drawn from just one cultural and linguistic group, the Banyarwanda, although within this group there are three subgroups: the Hutu, Tutsi and Twa. The Twa are a forest-dwelling pygmy people descended from Rwanda's earliest inhabitants. Scholars disagree on the origins of and differences between the Hutu and Tutsi; some believe differences are derived from former social castes within a single people, while others believe the Hutu and Tutsi arrived in the country separately.

5. Rwanda’s Parliament has more female members than any other parliament in the world. Currently, over 60% of the Parliament is dominated by women. Rwandan law dictates that a minimum of 30% of parliamentary seats must be reserved for women.

6. Rwanda (Ruanda) and Burundi (Urundi) became a part of German East Africa in 1890 and were ruled a single territory (Ruanda-Urundi). During the First World War Belgian forces captured Rwanda and Burundi. It wasn’t until 1962 that both countries gained independence from Belgium.

7. Mountains dominate central and western Rwanda. The highest peaks are found in the Virunga volcano chain in the northwest; this includes Mount Karisimbi, Rwanda's highest point, at 4,507 metres. The centre of the country is predominantly rolling hills, while the eastern border region consists of savanna, plains and swamps. Rwanda is also known as the Land of a Thousand Hills because most of the country is covered by rolling, grassy hills.
