1. An Arabic name for Morocco, al-Magrib al-Aqsa, means “the extreme west”. The term maghrib is Arabic for "west”. In the strict sense, the definite form al-maghrib denotes the country of Morocco in particular.

2. Morocco was once a member of the African Union but removed its membership in 1984 when the AU let one of the Western Sahara disputed territories enter as a member. Today Morocco is the only African state that is not a member of the African Union.

3. White is the color of mourning in Morocco. The writings of the Prophet Muhammad in the Hadith stress the preciousness of white garments as symbols of cleanliness. Thus, when a loved one has died, it is seems only fitting that he or she be buried in an atmosphere of such purity in the tranquil, dusty Moroccan hills.

4. Morocco is only 8 miles (13 km) from Europe, across the Strait of Gibraltar. It's also possible to see the Atlantic and the Mediterranean at the same time.

5. Casablanca is the largest city in Morocco, located in the central-western part of the country bordering the Atlantic Ocean. It is the largest city in the Maghreb, as well as one of the largest and most important cities in Africa, both economically and demographically. The name comes from the Portuguese, who in the 15th century conquered the area and called the city Casa Branca. Today the city is officially called Al-dar Al-Baidaa.

6. Marrakesh is a major city of the Kingdom of Morocco. It is the fourth largest city in the country, after Casablanca, Fes and Tangier. Today it is one of the busiest cities in Africa and serves as a major economic centre and tourist destination.

7. Rabat is the capital of Morocco and its seventh largest city centre. It is one of four Imperial cities of Morocco, and the medina of Rabat is listed as a World Heritage Site. In the 17th century, the Moroccan city Rabat was, for a time, the center of the notorious Sallee Rovers, who were corsairs, or pirates. Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe was a fictional captive of a “Turkish rover of Sallee.”
