In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Equatorial Guinea.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. Equatorial Guinea is the smallest country in the continent of Africa that is a member of the United Nations. Besides the mainland, it also has several islands in the north-west.
2. Covering 1,400 square kilometers, Monte Alén National Park is a veritable wildlife treasure trove. Here, you can explore forest trails and go in search of elusive animals including chimpanzees, forest elephants and the critically endangered mountain gorilla. Bird species are prolific here, and you can even arrange to stay overnight in one of the park's forest campsites.
3. Bata is the largest city in Equatorial Guinea and was formerly the capital city of the country. Bioko is the largest island on which the country’s capital, Malabo, is located, making it the only country in Africa with mainland on the continent but its capital on an island. However Oyala is the country's planned future capital, still under construction.
4. Formerly a colony of Spain with the name Spanish Guinea, the country achieved its independence on Oct. 12, 1968. Equatorial Guinea is the only independent country in Africa with Spanish as an official language.
5. Since independence from Spain in 1968, Equatorial Guinea has only ever been ruled by two men, the first President Francisco Macias Nguema, who was overthrown by his nephew Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo in 1979, the second Nguema, and has ruled till date.
6. Remote Corisco Island is situated to the south of the country near the border with Gabon. It is the archetypal paradise island, with deserted white sand beaches and shimmering aquamarine waters. Snorkelling and scuba diving are both excellent here, while the island's ancient cemetery dates back some 2,000 years and is thought to be one of the oldest in Central Africa.
7. Since the mid-1990s, Equatorial Guinea has become one of sub-Saharan Africa's largest oil producers. It is the richest country per capita in Africa, and its GDP adjusted for purchasing power parity per capita ranks 43th in the world. However, the wealth is distributed very unevenly and few people have benefited from the oil riches. The country's authoritarian government has one of the worst human rights records in the world.
