It used to be a Portuguese colony, and today still retains the language and cultural affinities with its former overlord. It’s one of the most well developed countries in Africa and it’s also becoming a top tourism destination.

1. Cabo Verde is a marine extension of the Sahara. A series of hot winds carrying brown dust from the Sahara appear in blasts that sweep across the islands during October to June and are known as harmattan.

2. Benito Mussolini the Italian dictator bought the rights to build an airport on Sal, Cabo Verde as he needed to refuel his aircraft on the flights between Europe and South America. Christopher Columbus visited the island of Boa Vista of Cabo Verde in 1498. Charles Darwin studied flora and fauna on the island in 1832. Vasco da Gama visited Santiago in 1497, on that same voyage he later discovered India.

3. When the archipelago became independent on July 5th 1975, the independence of Cape Verde was shared with Guinea Bissau. They were a joint country until 1980. Immediately following the November 1980 coup in Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde abandoned its hope for unity with Guinea-Bissau.

4. In 2005 there were 418,224 inhabitants on the Cape Verde islands. There are more Cape Verdeans living abroad than at home. Cape Verdeans also emigrated to the Netherlands, Italy, Portugal, others include Senegal, Angola, Luxemburg, Argentina and Brazil. In the UK there are groups of Cape Verdeans in Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle and Hull.

5. There was a concentration camp at Tarrafal which operated between 1936 and 1954 and then in the 1960’s but closing finally in 1974. The prison was closed for the second, and final, time following the Carnation Revolution on 25 April 1974 which ended Portugal's 50-year-old Fascist regime.

6. After independence, Praia, the capital city, underwent a demographic boom. After 33 years its population had quadrupled, receiving migrating movements from all the islands. As a result, half of the entire population of Cabo Verde currently resides in Santiago island; a fourth in the Municipality of Praia; and a fifth in the City of Praia alone.

7. Since the early 1990s, Cape Verde has been a stable representative democracy, and remains one of the most developed and democratic countries in Africa.
