In late 2020, we gathered close to 50 girls and young women from Diepsloot to be part of a UN-Habitat program called HERCITY that seeks girls’ participation to build sustainable and inclusive cities and communities. A beautiful concept - but can it work in such an impoverished and underserved community? How do we address the social issues these young women face that kept surfacing in all the discussions? Is it fair to show them what might be (through their designs and tactical urbanism) and then tell them there is no budget to implement? I saw hope, dreams and visions, bright eyes and willing, committed participation but when (and how) do they see the results?
