In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Madagascar.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Madagascar used to be a popular resting place for European pirates and was rumored to be the site of the independent pirate nation of Libertalia. According to the story, pirates renounced their national identities and called themselves Liberi, making their own system of government and law.

2. Most of Madagascar’s wildlife is found nowhere else on Earth. Madagascar has been an isolated island for around 88 million years, breaking away first Africa around 165 million years ago and then from India nearly 80 million years later. This isolation led to the development of a unique flora and fauna, with 90 percent of its wildlife found only in Madagascar.

3. Madagascar has an entire forest made of stones. Tsingy – Madagascar’s Stone Forest, has big, tall stones naturally lined up along with trees.

4. Before French colonial rule, Madagascar was ruled by a woman. Queen Ranavalona III, the last sovereign of the Kingdom of Madagascar, ruled from 1883 to 1897 before being deposed by French colonial forces. She was named after a previous powerful queen, Queen Ranavalona I, who ruled from 1828 to 1861 and attempted to protect the sovereignty of her country against European influence.

5. The country is also known as the Red Island. This is because of the soil on the island, which has a very distinctive red hue to it. This precise color is not seen in any other country or island in the world.

6. In popular Malagasy belief, the dead look out after the living, and the living look out for the dead. In a ceremony called Famadihana, the dead remains of an ancestor are first literally dug out and placed on the field. Then, the family members dance around the skeleton and engage in funny social debates, or “Kabari.” The dead ancestor then goes back inside the earth again, happy and wrapped in a new lamba.

7. Also known by its French colonial name “Tana”, Antananarivo is the capital and largest city in Madagascar. Full of modern buildings, factories and commercial properties, this 1.6 million metropolis is the political, economic, educational and cultural heart of the country.
