The importance of ward councillors is consistently overlooked. We blame them for the poor delivery of services but fail to praise when they do good. This week I was fortunate enough to interview Ward 73 DA councillor, Eleonor Hugget, who has thrown her energy into supporting needy families and individuals in her ward.

A number of residents around Johannesburg made contact with her hoping for assistance. Cllr Hugget chose to network with a variety of individuals, businesses, and organizations, willing to assist in response to the growing concerns over food insecurity, hunger, and other social challenges affecting residents as a result of COVID-19.

“On any given day, I receive more than 60 WhatsApp messages from residents, asking for assistance,” Cllr Eleonor Hugget noted.

Cllr Hugget partnered the NOAH CAN, the Norwood, Orange Grove and Houghton Community Action Network, where the network is striving to provide food to families and individuals identified the councillor, as those in dire need.

In her other initiatives, since the lockdown was announced, she has not only been feeding and clothing homeless people around Johannesburg and also helping with other distressing challenges affecting residents.

Eleonor has also thrown her weight behind an initiative that aims to clean the city of Johannesburg, with the idea that when the lockdown is relaxed and people are able to come back into the city, they find it somewhat different.

Eleonor noted that she wanted to thank the people of Johannesburg for respecting and complying with the lockdown.  She has invited anyone who wants to be involved in her initiatives to contact her on 071-785-8068.
